Background

The Global Survivors Fund (“GSF”) was launched in October 2019 by Dr Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad, Nobel Peace Prize laureates 2018. Its mission is to enhance access to reparations for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence around the globe, thus responding to a gap long identified by survivors. GSF acts to provide interim reparative measures in situations where states or other parties are unable or unwilling to meet their responsibilities. GSF advocates for duty bearers as well as the international community to develop reparations programmes. It also guides states and civil society by providing expertise and technical support for designing reparations programmes. GSF’s survivor-centric approach is the cornerstone of its work.

Role Summary

The overall role of the Head of Communications is to develop and implement the GSF Communications strategy and contribute to the positioning and visibility of GSF as leading actor in its mission to enhance survivors’ access to reparations.

Position Responsibilities

  • Establish and drive a multi-channel communications strategy, which clearly links and re-enforces GSF greater multiyear Strategic Plan
  • Position the organisation as a Thought Leader amongst all relevant stakeholders
  • Develop a brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms
  • Build brand amongst GSF staff and partners, promoting values and vision across the organisation
  • Advise GSF staff on communications best practices for maximum impact
  • Lead the communications team, conduct appraisals and update team’s job descriptions
  • Develop contacts and manage media relations
  • Prepare and manage all communications material as they relate to GSF pillars: Act, Advocate and Guide
  • Oversee and contribute to the creation of digital, video, audio and print content
  • Build capacity of partner organisations on communications, as required
  • Develop communications crisis response plans / scenario planning and serve as crisis point of contact
  • Oversee the organisation and running of GSF events with the communications team, in close collaboration with the programmes team
  • Design and develop standards for communications success; develop and monitor metrics to measure reach and impact of communications and to identify areas of success and opportunity.
  • Develop written press materials – releases, talking points, story pitches – and manage internal approval process with stakeholders and partners.
  • Assist in facilitating media interviews for GSF staff and subject matter experts, including identifying internal spokespersons, gaining approval and ensuring alignment with the Communications Strategy
  • Ensure media training and coaching
  • Work in collaboration with Fundraising to create communications and fundraising campaigns
  • Work with the Advocacy team to support advocacy campaigns
  • Assist with the implementation of the marketing campaign for set donation goals
  • Track marketing data, create projections and set goals

Expériences / Formation

Education and Experience

  • A degree in Communications and a postgraduate degree in a relevant field
  • 10 to 15 years of relevant professional experience

  • Strong written, verbal and digital communication skills
  • Analytical skills to solve problems and find the best way to convey a message

  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Full proficiency in English is required; proficiency in French would be an asset.
